From the Fourth of July and Labor Day to Thanksgiving and Christmas, especially since many holidays in 2020 fall along a weekend, many Americans will take advantage of the long weekends to take trips, host festive gatherings, and spend time with loved ones. Since alcohol consumption is often part of the celebration, there is a significant spike in drunk driving accidents and arrests during these holiday weekends.

In order to keep the roads and highways safe, law enforcement departments throughout Florida and across the United States increase the number of officers patrolling the streets and set up DUI checkpoints to arrest anyone suspected of driving while impaired.

To avoid spending a long holiday weekend behind bars and potentially suffering the harsh consequences of a criminal conviction, here are several ways to keep yourself and others safe:

  • Take a Lyft or Uber home – Considered the most popular mode of transportation in recent years, you can simply request a ride by using an app on your phone, whether you need a ride home after a night of drinking or a ride to the airport to catch a flight. However, surge pricing often occurs during the holidays, so be aware of a potential price hike for rides.

  • Call a friend – If you know someone who plans to attend the same event as you and does not plan on drinking, ask if he/she could be your designated driver.

  • Don’t drink – Not having a sip of alcohol means you will avoid a DUI altogether. If you decide to stay sober throughout the event, you could be another person’s DD.

  • Spend the night somewhere close – If you know someone who lives in the area, ask if it is fine to sleep over. Additionally, a hotel or motel room costs much less than a DUI.

  • Be the party host – You can’t get a DUI if you don’t leave your home, so why not host the event at your place. Arrange rides home for your guests in advance or make space for people to spend the night.
